Similar brined white cheeses produced outside the European Union are often made partly or wholly of cow&#8217;s milk, and they are also sometimes called <em>feta<\/em>. It is a crumbly <a title=\"Cheese ripening\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cheese_ripening\">aged<\/a> cheese, commonly produced in blocks, and has a slightly grainy texture. Feta is used as a table cheese, as well as in salads (e.g. the <a title=\"Greek salad\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greek_salad\">Greek salad<\/a>) and pastries. Most notable is its use in the popular <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Phyllo\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phyllo\">phyllo<\/a>-based dishes <a title=\"Spanakopita\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanakopita\">spanakopita<\/a>(&#8220;spinach pie&#8221;) and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Tyropita\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tyropita\">tyropita<\/a> (&#8220;cheese pie&#8221;), or served with some olive oil or olives and sprinkled with aromatic herbs such as <a title=\"Oregano\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oregano\">oregano<\/a>. It can also be served cooked or <a title=\"Grilling\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grilling\">grilled<\/a>, as part of a <a title=\"Sandwich\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sandwich\">sandwich<\/a>, in <a title=\"Omelette\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Omelette\">omelettes<\/a>, or as a salty alternative to other cheeses in a variety of dishes.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2002, &#8220;feta&#8221; has been a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Protected designation of origin\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protected_designation_of_origin\">protected designation of origin<\/a> product in the <a title=\"European Union\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Union\">European Union<\/a>. According to the relevant <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"European law\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_law\">EU legislation<\/a>, only those cheeses produced in a traditional way in some areas of Greece (mainland and the island of <a title=\"Lesbos\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lesbos\">Lesbos<\/a>), and made from <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Domestic sheep\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Domestic_sheep\">sheep&#8217;s<\/a>milk, or from a mixture of sheep and <a title=\"Goat\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goat\">goat<\/a>&#8216;s milk (up to 30%) of the same area, may bear the name &#8220;feta&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Gooch_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Feta#cite_note-Gooch-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> However, similar white-brined cheeses (often called &#8220;white cheese&#8221; in various languages) are found in the <a title=\"Eastern Mediterranean\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eastern_Mediterranean\">Eastern Mediterranean<\/a> and around the <a title=\"Black Sea\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Sea\">Black Sea<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Feta (Greek: \u03c6\u03ad\u03c4\u03b1, f\u00e9ta, &#8220;slice&#8221;) is a brined curd white cheese made in Greece from sheep&#8217;s milk, or from a mixture of sheep and goat&#8216;s milk.
